Natives on Lake Atitlan

Posted in On Lake Atitlan by Jopa on the December 14th, 2006

The natives around Lake Atitlan are very colorful. They dress and live in many different ways. Some try and dress in more western clothing while some stick to traditional dress. Here are some pictures of natives on and around Lake Atitlan.

This lady is running her booth at the Solola Market, which is right up the way from Panajechel on Lake Atitlan. Solola is not really on Lake Atitlan but you can see the lake from there. I love belts…

This kid on a bike in western clothing is typical of young boys around Lake Atitlan though not all have bikes.

Young men on Lake Atitlan also usually wear western clothing most of the time.

At the main square in Solola, Guatemala you may see this kind of scene with armed military mixed with western dressed youth and older men in traditional dress.

Many of the fishermen dress like coyboys.

Girls both young and old almost always wear traditional clothing. Though sometimes they wear western garb. This girl as most of the youth around Lake Atitlan is happy.

Here is a nice picture of women from a family carrying wood, this is a very common sight around Lake Atitlan as most indigenous families use wood to cook and heat.

I know the theme is just on clothing, I could say much more if I had more time today. but I have to get away from the computer… more later…

The bosa nova music duo in San Marcos, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
Cura and Alfredo are the original members but the group is
now expanding. I joined, we have a keyboard player for a few months,
my friend Melissa is sitting in for a couple of weeks and Terri is playing flute and singing

So now with 6 musicos we are booking some gigs and even getting
paid a little. I really enjoy having a music project, below are
some pics from the gig Saturday the 9th of December 2006.

This is the core band, though you can’t see Terri playing flute to
the left of us.

This is Cura the original and main singer she has a great Brazilian
voice and is very beautiful.

Here is Melissa and Alfredo. Alfredo is basically the leader and mastermind
of the band and Melissa is my friend from last year here, unfortunately
Melissa will be leaving soon.
