Lake Atitlan Stories

Living in Panajechel, Guatemala

Posted in On Lake Atitlan by Jopa on the January 17th, 2008

Though part of me would rather be living in a small village on Lake Atitlan the other part of me is happy to be in a bigger city with Internet and nightlife.

Calle Santander, Panajechel, Guatemala

Panajechel is a rather fast paced lifestyle compared to most of Lake Atitlan, natives and artisans travel from all around the region to sell their wares on the main market street “Calle Santander”. There are several restaurants and night clubs in town that do music mostly on the weekends, but a few do music all week.

The lake is beautiful beyond word or pictures, but here is a pic to give you an idea of the beauty here.

Yes, I visited Panajachel y Lago de Atitlan for the first time during my holiday leave from the university here in the EE.UU. Although, the small villages around the lake are more interesting (I visited Santiago y San Marcos) I’m sure as a semi-permanent resident I would also prefer Panajachel because of the reasons you cited. However, I learned many years ago that (for me) a place of enchantment tends to gradually lose its magic when it becomes home, this realization hit home after my relocation to the mountains of Colorado. Still, I cherish all that I experienced in Guatemala and am now considering the possibility of living there following early retirement at age 62. As I write this, we are in the throes of another killer cold wave. My body cannot tolerate these inviernos much longer. Yeriel

Colorado eh? After growing up and spending most of the Winters of my life in Colorado I don’t miss the cold, snow would be ok if it was not so cold. My Colorado Summer town was -17 F last night. It will be a long time before I try another Winter up there in the Rockies…
