Lake Atitlan Stories

Pics - Lake Atitlan, Antiqua and the Jungle

Posted in On Lake Atitlan, Around Guatemala by Jopa on the February 4th, 2007

When I left lake Atitlan and went to Antigua it turns out that my friend knows the main dude in the Buena Vista Social Club (project2) so we went to the show to check it out. Ignacio(in front) is pretty cool, he is the son of one of the original members.

These trees are all around Lake Atitlan. They have the cool shedding thing going on and from what I hear are the trees that copal comes from.

Solstice at Tikal, Guatemala

Posted in Around Guatemala by Jopa on the January 24th, 2007

Here is a picture journal of my afternoon/evening at Tikal. It was quite the enchanted evening with the setting of Tikal in Guatemala’s lowland jungle and Kannal playing a solstice concert.

Here is a nice picture of one of the pyramids on the way in.

There are many nice little courtyards like this in the park.

A little while before sunset, the band Kannal prepares for their concert.

While the band prepares and some people mill below, I go up the pyramid.

Its a sweet view from the top.

Tzol is up on the pyramid documenting too.

Quite a few folks are chilling on top of the pyramid, many brought instruments and we got an improv sunset jam/dance going.

After sunset we wrap up our jam and head down for the concert.

Gilly drummin, lookin quite irie.

The setting was quite cool with just fire for light, musica organica and the right kind of people for a night out on solstice.

That wraps up my story of Solstice at Tikal in Guatemala
more stories coming soon…peace…

Solola Market, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Posted in Around Guatemala by Jopa on the December 3rd, 2006

I went to the market in Solola to visit the paca (the paca is used clothing from the US or other countries). Solola is up in the mountains on the rim above Lake Atitlan, you can see Lake Atitlan from many parts of town.

In this first picture the lady is giving me the “gringo with a camera” look. You can see the piles of clothing and bargain clothing shoppers.

Here we have the back view of the “gringo with a camera” lady and more shoppers.

There were a few soldiers in the main central park, chillin with their rifles.

Here is a good example of women in traditional and men in modern dress. This is usually what you see around Lake Atitlan.

Another market shot, string is easy to find in Guatemala.

This kind of stuff is all over Lake Atitlan, I always have to stop and look when I see a stand with this many belts.

The ride home on the chicken bus can seem a little blurry up front.
